Is it possible to have child items fly out with a vertical left menu? Where can I find some doc or info regarding this? Also, can the appearance/disappearance of the child menu be timed a bit (takes js, right?) so that there is some pause before the menu disappears rather than the immediate disappearance when it is CSS only? Thanks ...

I bet if you did negative margins it would work. the right fly-out is simply the margin set to the width+2 of the parent menu.
