Hi,
I've just installed the House menu object and was wondering if there is a way to show the child menu items of a parent item when it is clicked rather than having all the child items in the site showing at once?
Any help much appreciated

Danny,
You could accomplish this by using two separate instances of HouseMenu. The first should be set to display all site pages but not nested menu items, and the second should be set to display children of the current page.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for all your efforts with the HouseMenu!
As posted above, I'd like to generate a menu that shows child nodes of the select parent (if that makes sense?). Can this be achieved using just a single instance, and with the current version of the HouseMenu
e.g
All nodes of a site
A
1
2
B
1a
2a
C
5
7
When node A is the current node
A
1
2
B
C

I think it's possible. It would be a matter of getting the CSS selectors right.
I will experiment with getting this to work with the new version of HouseMenu, but I don't really want to take the time to focus on the old one. I am currently using the new one on a couple of my sites to "dogfood" it, so the beta should be available soon.
I'm not saying it's impossible in the current version, just that I need to focus my energies on the new one. Since HouseMenu is entirely driven by the CSS, you might be able to find an example of CSS for accomplishing this and then adapt it to HouseMenu.

Hi Tim,
first of all thanks for your efforts and the amazing HouseMenu. I have a bit of a similar problem. I'm using a Horizontal Tab Menu and all the Tabs have Child items. If I click on one of the Tabs it gets selected, because I have the option CurrentItem. However, the big problem is, that when I select one of the childs, the parent tab gets disselected. Is there any method or way to show the parent of a particular item when I am not in the level of the parent?
Example where Tab 1 is selected (*):
TAB 1* // TAB 2 // TAB 3 TAB 1 SUB 1 // TAB 1 SUB 2 // TAB 1 SUB 3
Now click on TAB 1 SUB 1
TAB 1 // TAB 2 // TAB 3 TAB 1 SUB 1* // TAB 1 SUB 2 // TAB 1 SUB 3
And what I'm tryin to do:
TAB 1* // TAB 2 // TAB 3 TAB 1 SUB 1* // TAB 1 SUB 2 // TAB 1 SUB 3
Many thanks for your help! Thomas |

Tim, you're right, CSS does work to an extent, but it's not an overly elegant way when you need specific rules for the different scenarios. Also it won't work under certain scenarios when the site structure becomes rather deep and complex.
Is it still possible to purchase the source code? I recall when House of Nuke was a sole entity, the source code was for sale.
Cheers,
Bunsen |

Thomas,
HouseMenu is supposed to be able to do that, but something is not quite right. This is one of the reasons it is beta.
For what it's worth, in the new version of HouseMenu that I am currently developing, this works. If you don't mind a little dust and debris, you can see the new HouseMenu in action at www.writergear.com, as I play around with dog-fooding it.

Bunsen,
The source code for HouseMenu is not currently (officially) available. What the heck! I just uploaded the last version of the professional package (with source code) that was available for sale at snowcovered.com in the past.
Head on over to the Downloads page and grab it!

Hi Tim,
this is awesome :-) I love your HouseMenu!!! And I've got another idea - don't know if it was implemented so far. In the old version you've got the chance to define ShowPageIcons or not. This means you can either show all the icons or none of them. It would be really great if the option HidePageNames could be extended to assign specific pages, because I fell in love with the apple.com menu. There you click on the apple (icon, without text) to get back to the home page. Just a suggestion if you've got some spare time.
Keep the great work going - it's terrific! Both thumbs up ;-) |

Hello,
I have the same problem as Thomas described above. When I select a child item the parent item gets deselected.
@Thomas: Did you find a solution for the problem?
@Tim: The new version will support this? When do you think it might be released?
Another problem of mine is that the Admin and Host menu items are not clickable. I guess this is because they are dynamic dropdown menus in the default skin but I'm using a static menu.
If you want to see what kind of menu we are trying to build take a look at http://jkwebs.de/rheuma/ (it's German)
I really hope my problems can be resolved, since HouseMenu is by far the greatest menu for DNN and I would really like to use it.
Thank you! --Jakob Hilden
PS: I should add, that I'm using the HouseMenu Skin Objekt 1.4 and that I'm trying to make it work with two instances. |

Jakob,
I wish I could tell you exactly when the new version will be released, but I don't want to promise anything with the way my schedule has been. I am working on it!
In the meantime, there are a few things I will try to fix with the current version, and I'll try to get that update posted today. One of the things I want to fix is the problem with the Admin and Host menu items being disabled in a static menu.

Hi Tim,
thank you very much for your effort, but I'm afraid the problem with the admin/host menuitems is still there. Although the items are now clickable, the submenu does not appear (at least not with 2 menu instances). I figure this is because "admin" and "host" are not real menuitems like all the others. But we figured out a workaround for that problem (now we just display 2 more menues with the scope set to the tabIDs of admin and host) so don't worry about that.
What still bugs us a lot is the other problem with the disappearing submenu. I tried the following, but unfortunately I get errors when I try to insert the parameter for scope like this. Do you maybe know a solution to that?
<% If PortalSettings.ActiveTab.ParentID <> -1 Then %>
<dnn:HOUSEMENU runat="server" ID="dnnHOUSESUBMENU1" Scope="<%=PortalSettings.ActiveTab.ParentID%>" ShowAdmin="True" IsRecursive="False" Orientation="H" Mode="S" CssElementId="submenu" />
<% Else %>
<dnn:HOUSEMENU runat="server" ID="dnnHOUSESUBMENU2" Scope="0" ShowAdmin="True" IsRecursive="False" Orientation="H" Mode="S" CssElementId="submenu" />
<% End if %>
Thank You, --Jakob |

Is the menu on this site (www.houseofnuke.com) using housemenu? If it is then can you post instructions on how to get the menus to drop down?
Thanks! |

Jakob,
I think you want to set the scope on your first menu to -1. That tells HouseMenu to grab all the pages from DNN, but with IsRecursive set to false it will only show the root/top level items. I also think you need a unique CSSElementId for each menu.

Leslie,
The menu on this site is indeed HouseMenu. The dropdowns are rendered based on the CSS in the skin and the settings on the HouseMenu object in the skin.
To get a menu like the one on this site -- a basic replacement for the core menu -- the menu's scope should be set to -1, IsRecursive should be true, the mode should be D (for dynamic), and the CssElementId should be a unique ID that corresponds to your CSS.
Hope that helps.

THose are the settings I'm using when I get the results I described. If changed the templates from DNNCreative from Static to Dynamic and the menu functions incorrectly.
Do you (or anyone) have an example of a skin and HouseMenu that uses Dynamic?
Thanks! |

Tim
I’ve searched this site and the internet for days in hopes to find out how I can apply a style to the parent menu item of an active child page. No Luck.
Tim, I’ve seen the earlier post that referred to the version you are working through and running on writergear and that is what I need –“menurootbranch” capabilities. The post that mentioned it as an upcoming release was from 07/06/2007 and since the beta of version 2 was posted long after (04/29/2008), I was wondering if I’m missing something.
I have explored the two styles “MenuItemBreadcrumb” (v1.x) and “ParentLink” (v2) till no end. They are never applied – dead ends. I’m hoping that the version of housemenu which you are running on writergear could or has been made available.
Even if there is something else that someone can point me to like a version including source that can be tweaked to get it to recognize and style the parent of a selected item. HouseMenu is phenomenal, but without this, I’m stuck using dnnMenu. |
